| The 5th bi-annual Marin Nonprofit Conference will be held on October 25, 2007. Mark your calendars for this year's Conference: "Inquire. Explore. Evolve." LUNCH TIME SESSION: Sneak Peek: Status
of the Marin Nonprofit Sector First Report Back on The Marin County Nonprofit Landscape Study, a project of the Center for Volunteer and Nonprofit Leadership of Marin (Center). The study seeks to establish a baseline report of the county’s nonprofit sector, describing its size, scope, geographical distribution, services provided, internal structure, economic impact, number of people employed, fiscal health, and sustainability. This is the first study of its kind in the county, and will be used by funders, policy makers and donors to make informed decisions. TRACK 1: COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Turning the 'Baby Boom' into the 'Resource
Boom': Strategies for Expanding Civic Engagement
Among 55+ Professionals Sabrina L. Reilly will discuss the information NCOA collected from its in-depth review of thirty-four nonprofits who are engaging adults 55+ in service to their communities and the principles formulated from these promising practices. This workshop will be of particular interest to nonprofit leaders who want to capitalize on the resources of an expanding pool of adults 55+ to strengthen organizational capacity and effective delivery of services. Nonprofits and Congregations: Nurturing
Volunteers and Promoting Civic Engagement This panel will bring together local leaders to talk about the successes and challenges of partnerships between Marin nonprofit organizations and faith communities. Hidden Assets: Investing in
Volunteers Volunteers play a critical role in sustaining our organizations and our
sector. They raise money, provide clerical support, offer pro-bono professional
services, organize events and serve on Boards of Directors. This session
will focus on how volunteers can be engaged at every level of your organization
and how organizations can best cultivate and elevate volunteer engagement. New Models for Engaging Youth It is often said that “youth are our future,” but of course, they are also our present. Join our panelists for a discussion of how the nonprofit sector can best support the civic participation and leadership of young people. Topics will include how volunteerism can support leadership development, and how our sector can break down traditional barriers to meaningful youth engagement. TRACK 2: DEVELOPMENT & COMMUNICATIONS Diversifying Your Funding Base Almost $300 billion was donated privately to nonprofits in the U.S. in 2006. Is your nonprofit getting its fair share? This session includes an overview of fundraising theory and a detailed discussion of the eleven ways that nonprofits raise funds. The workshop will include "Zimmerman's 15 Rules of Fundraising" as well as other valuable materials and exercises to help your organization diversify its fundraising efforts. This workshop is guaranteed to inspire board members, staff and volunteers.
Join Mission Minded founders Jennie Winton and Zach Hochstadt as they walk you through the most important aspects of defining and marketing your organization’s brand. You’ll learn: what brand is and how it benefits your organization, how research should guide your work, a step-by-step plan for determining the brand of your organization, and tips for hiring and working with outside consultants. New Ideas for New Money While foundation grants and major gift campaigns may be
the bread and butter of most fundraising efforts, they are not the only
way to raise money. Successful nonprofits are constantly exploring how
to tap into new money and donors, while elevating their brand. Panelists
will share examples of non-traditional strategies for raising funds, including
email and web-based fundraising, giving circles, product sales, and conceptual
marketing. The eNonprofit: Effective Online Campaigns What are the strategies, tactics and practices that result in effective online campaigns? We’ll review the elements of effective campaigns and review examples of successful online campaigns. Whether your campaigns focus on advocacy, fundraising or other areas, you will get ideas and excellent practices that nonprofits use to engage their stakeholders online. The session includes a brief overview of online fundraising, then moves into examples and ways you can build your own successful online campaigns. We will finish with discussion and questions.
Confronting the Ethical Dilemma Community based organizations are consistently faced with critical decisions around funding and funders, programs, and staffing – all of which can drive the reputation – let alone the survival of an organization. Come and join a lively discussion with your peers on this topical issue, share some of your own tough choices, and learn some key skills that will help you and others in your organization navigate the often slippery path of ethical decision making. Demystifying the Hype of Social
Entrepreneurship and Social Enterprise In this interactive session we’ll explore how social entrepreneurs see their work in terms of social impact, innovation, leadership, and financial sustainability. We’ll also touch on the topic of social enterprises and explore some of the mechanics, tensions, and realities of starting and/or managing a social enterprise. Finally, we’ll give you some good resources for business planning for your organization. Social Entrepreneurship and Social Enterprise
in Practice: This panel discussion will help you understand this emerging field and see the opportunities for your organization. This highly interactive panel will bring together national and local practitioners to discuss how they’ve integrated social enterprise to further their organization’s mission and success. Participation in Social Entrepreneurship and Social Enterprise—Demystifying the Hype recommended. Hardball Advocacy and Lobbying
for Nonprofits This workshop will explore what constitutes effective lobbying, why traditional advocacy is increasingly a flawed strategy, and why more nonprofits are turning to hardball tactics. Session will also include how to form and manage coalitions of organizations within a given nonprofit sector as well as an overview of lobbying and advocacy skills and tools. TRACK 4: GOVERNANCE & LEADERSHIP The Tailored Board Tired of the one-size-fits-all approach to board development? Want to build a board that fits your organization? This is a rare opportunity to reflect on your board’s size, make-up and structure through the lens of your mission and history. While there is not one right board, there is a board that is right for you. Expanding Your Leadership Style To Achieve
Organizational Effectiveness Is Leadership an art or a science? What is the definition of leadership and what are the differences between management and leadership? What is the relationship between leadership, followership and partnership? What is your leadership style? The session will include a brief overview of the 100 years of leadership research, as well as an assessment of your leadership style, and an experiential exercise to illustrate the importance of expanding your leadership style repertoire. Successful Succession! Join us for this rare opportunity to discuss the many inherent
challenges in successful leadership transition. The presentation will
focus on Executive succession planning, including simple steps that can
prepare an agency for an unanticipated change in leadership, as well as
strategies to help your organization sustain momentum – and even
thrive – during an open and active transition and search. Growing our Ranks: an Evolution
in Leadership Studies predict that in the coming decade, the nonprofit
sector will need to recruit twice as many executives as we currently have.
This fact presents a daunting task but also an incredible opportunity
to reflect on the needs, state, and future of our sector. Emerging and
established leaders are invited to attend this interactive session, focusing
on how we can identify, engage, and prepare for this new cadre of leadership. TRACK 5: SUSTAINABILITY Linking Money to Mission: A Balancing Act Why do so many nonprofit organizations run into financial difficulties despite their excellent programs? What happens when you finally get that long-wished-for funding and the organization grows overnight? Will scale make you more financially stable? And can you afford to buy that building that you so desperately need? Learn how to balance your organization’s mission with its financial realities by exploring your organization’s capital situation, its plans for the future and the best path to achieve your long-term goals. Assessing Financial Health: Indicators
that work for your nonprofit Every organization wants to be financially fit. But what does that mean? Does financial health look the same for a $300,000 artist in residency program as for an $8 million senior housing project? Join presenter Kathi deFremery, of the Center for Volunteer and Nonprofit Leadership, for a discussion of how financial indicators can be customized to best serve your stakeholders and measure your success. Compensation's Role in Organizational Sustainability
This session is designed to educate and share ideas and concerns regarding the complex issues around compensation in nonprofits. Topics to be explored include the living wage movement, the aging of nonprofit leadership and the financial challenges of succession planning, funder expectations and restrictions around pay rates, and how compensation programs relate to organizational values and sustainability. Change Based Evaluation As nonprofit leaders, we are constantly striving to create change in the world, but how can we measure our effectiveness? Evaluating program success and documenting what we have learned through our work is critical to every organization’s sustainability. During this session, we will discuss scaleable strategies for effectively evaluating program outcomes, and share the tools needed to create individual logic and change-based evaluation plans.
